I remember playing at a tournament in Everett Washington with a friend and we sat down to play against Grant Baze and his client.
To me Grant Baze is the consummate professional . Always impeccably dressed and well mannered.
Anyway they had a bidding sequence in which Grant splintered in spades and the client missed it. They end up in 3NT or higher NT and my partner has his lead out and Grant informs us of the missed splinter.
The client was furious saying “it had better not have been a splinter” and Grant was the perfect gentleman still.
Anyway my partner is no fool and led his fourth best spade and hit my five card suit. The client still furious threw his hand down and told us to tell him when we were finished taking spade tricks and I will never forget what my partner said to the client after the hand was over.
He said he was lucky that spades broke 5-5.
That cracks me up everytime I think of it.
